Abstract

In the present study, carbohydrate metabolism was
prospectively investigated in fifty women, in good physical
health, who wanted to use oral contraceptives and agreed
about Gynera as a new brand of oral contraceptive and who
could be followed up for 6 months. All women were sexually
active, between age of 18-35 years, in a good health, not
breast feeding, had terminated her last pregnancy 42 days or
more prior to the study, had at least one normal menstrual
period since termination of pregnancy rely exclusiveiy upon
the pills as her only method of contraception throughout the
study and signed informed ~onsent.
Carbohydrate metabolism was assessed by performing: Oral
glucose tolerance test before and 3 and 6 months after pill
intake.
With the use of Gynera as contraceptive pills, the
following changes were reported
(a) no significant increase of mean serum glucose values of
O.G.T.T. after 3 months (P >0.05) of Gynera use.
(b) significant increase of mean fasting serum glucose value
after 6 months (P <0.05) of Gynera use.
(c) Highly significant increase of mean serum glucose values
after 30,60,90,120,150 and 180 minutes, after 6 months (P
<0.001) of Gynera use.

This study showed a significant elevation of serum
glucose with Gynera use. These changes were related to the
duration of use as shown by the highly significant increase 6
months after Gynera use. So,a relative hyperglycaemia occurred
after 6 months of Gynera use compared with base line and
after 3 months’ use, but all are within the norms for glucose
tolerance.
Regarding carbohydrate metabolism with Gynera we
conclude that :
- With the use of Gynera as contraceptive pills, a definite
alteration of glucose tolerance occurred. However, it should
be ~tressed that the glucose tolerance curves met with
during this study did not reach the diabetic curve levels.
- Gynera pills are more suitable for short-term use purposes,
especially with younger age (below 35 years old).
- It is mandatory to perform glucose tolerance tests at 6
months intervals in women using Gynera as contraceptive
pills to detect early any alterations of their glucose
tolerance.
- Exclusion of women with abnormal or altered glucose
tolerance is very important before committing them to the
use of Gynera pills. This can be easily done by determination
of 2 hours postprandial blood glucose values, which
may be followed by O.G.T.T. to evaluate precisely glucose
tolerance.
