Abstract GOITER IN CHILDREN Thyroid enlargement is common in the adult,but it iG uncommon in the pediatric age. The relative incidence of the different pathologies of goiter in such age group is of particular importance in the recognition of their causes. There are many causes of the thyroid gland enlargement as congenital or acquired causes including inflammatory and jj neoplasmic causeso The acquired causes also include endemic and iatrogenic thyroid diseases including those Occur due to diet, drugs and irradiation. The Arabian surgeon Albucasis performed possibly the earliest recorded extirpation of goiter in the 10th century. from 1596 to 1834 before the introduction of ether (1846) , 29 euthentic operations were listed by Halsted (1920). Thyroid function tests aid in diagnosis and differentiating various types of goiter, also in proving if there is thyrotoxicosis or not.
