Abstract

Maize plants are attacked by several insects; the considered ones in the current study are: the greater sugarcane borer, Sesamia cretica Led., the European corn borer, Ostrima nuhilalis Hub. and maize leafminer, Pseudonapomyza spicata Mall. Experiments were carried out at the farm and Entomology laboratory of Faculty of Agriculture, Kafr El-Sheikh, Tanta University, and at the screenhouse of Sakha Agricultural Research Station, form 1998 through 2001. The conducted experiments, and obtained results could be
summarized as follows:
1. Host plant preference:
Four host plants (maize, pop corn, sorghum and broom-corn) were tested in the field to find out their relative preference to the abovementioned insects in 1998 and 1999 maize seasons.
Sesamia cretica Led.:
The insect preferred most maize plants, followed by pop corn, while sorghum came third. However, broom-corn was completely free from the borer infestation.
