Abstract

The present work was conducted to study the effect of different drainage conditions, flood and drip irrigation system on the hydrological, ph!.sical and chemical properties of the clay soils as well as on the productivih- of field and citrus crops. This work aimed also to evaluate the efficiency of tile drainage and its interrelation to irrigation systems in heaw cia!. soils at middle Nile Delta. Therefore, field experiments were conducted at three neighbor sites in Kafr El-Zayat district, El-Gharbia Gu\.ernorate. Middle of Nile Delta during 1994, 1995 and 1996. The first site located at Kafr EEKosar village (site I), which represented nondrained surface flood irrigated soil and was cultivated with field crops (rice or corn in summer season). The second and third sites (site 2 and site 3) \vere located at Abo El-Ghr village, they were tile drained at 30 111 apart and 1.35 m deep, and were occupied with Egyptian Baladi mandarin. The used irrigation system was surface flooding irrigation in site 3 and trickle irrigation in site 3. sisturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected from soil profiles, \\liich were dug at each site. Each tile drained site was represented by two profiles. i.e., above the drain pipe and in the midwa!, bet\\-een t\\.o laterals for comparison. The soil samples were used to detsnnine the main physical and cl-temical soil properties. Water table depth was recorded daily through three years. and consequentl!.. Hydraulic head was calculated between irrigations at different distances from pipe drainas. Also drain discharge was measured during all imgation cycles and the other hydroIogica1 parameters were calculated. The hydraulic conductivity was determined in field. Finally,
