Abstract In many countries of the world as well as in Egypt. the possibi1ty of damage of structures due to expansive soil constitutes a severe problem in design and construction. There are several methods to overcome the heave developed from this soil. One of these methods is the replacement of soil by sand cushions. Although this method is widely used for constructions in Egypt, a little attention has been given to the academic study of this method untill now. The research work inhand aims to study the behaviour of isolated foundations on expansive soil when they are treated with sand cushion beneath them. Also, the study includes. firstly, the effect of the thickness and width of cushion, secondly, the effect of the applying stress at cushion surface, and thirdly the effect of the grading of sand used in cushion. These parameters were studied in order to achieve the most suitable values to minimize the vertical movement of the foundation to the practical value that buildings can tolerate. |
