Abstract

Processing of the phosphate ore for industrial uses, yields a slimy clayey and solid wastes disposals. Utilization of tailings discarded by ore milling plants is becoming a common practice to avoid pollution hazards and to improve the economic feasibility of new mining projects.
Approximately 1.5 million tons of phosphate tailings are accumulated from the washing circuit of the Nile Valley phosphate plants representing, a waste disposal problems. The trends of our research takes place through three directions each of them can be taken as a positive use of phosphate tailings. These three directions can be summarized as follows:
1- Production of bricks suitable for different construction purposes. The results of this trail are reasonable as compared to those of the Nile silt and sornaga bricks.
2- The second trial of the positive uses of these tailings is the production of pottery, where good quality pots are obtained.
3- Improving soil for agriculture of some plants in soil composed of different mixtures of the slime and solid wastes. Plants grown in a soil composed of phosphate show better results than that grown in a recliamed sand soil.
The positive uses of phosphate tailings are beneficial in conservation of natural resources such as Nile silt and in reducing the environmental harms of tailings.
