Abstract

Effective time management has become increasingly important for managers as they seek to accomplish objectives in todays organizations, which have been restructured for efficiency while employing fewer people.
Managers can improve their ability to manage time effectively by examining their attitudes toward time, analyzing time-wasting behaviors, and developing better time management skills.
Also, they can improve their performance and promotion potential with more effective time utilization.
Several researches in U.S.A have been focused on how time management affect the managers’ performance, stress level and their satisfaction about their job and they reported a variety of consequences that can result from various levels of personal control over time.
The present study aimed to determine the effect of time management training program on head nurses’ performance, stress responses and their job satisfaction.
Data were collected from head nurses in all medical and surgical inpatient care units at Alexandria Main University Hospital.
The sample of the study:
All head nurses available at the time of the study.
There were 35 head nurses, in medical units (16) and in surgical units (19).
Tools of the study:
1- The exploratory tools:
a. The activity time analysis sheet; in order to analyze daily activities actually performed by the head nurses and time consumed in each, as well as interruption tune. Activities were categorized into areas of: patient centered activities, personnel centered
activities,unit-centered activities and miscellaneous activities.
b. Perceived control over time scale; was used to assess the extent to which head nurses believe they can directly affect their time is spent.
c. Time management behaviors scale; was used to assess the frequency at which head nurses engaged in time management behaviors in their work situations, included:
planning, organizing, scheduling and controlling.
d. Job performance evaluation scale; was developed to assess the head nurses’
performance in their work setting, included: work habit dimension, employee
dimension, work dimension and lead / supervisory dimension.
e. Job satisfaction scale; was used to assess head nurses’ satisfaction with their work;
included: feeling happy, enthusiastic, enjoyable and interested about work.
f. Anxiety-stress questionnaire; was used to measure stress level of head nurses;
included: job induced tension, somatic tension and general fatigue and uneasiness.
2. Developing and implementing time management training program tools:
* a) Needs assessment tools; a structured questionnaire was developed to collect data related to head nurses educational preparation on time management and their previous attendance for training program and their desire to attend a time management training program.
