Abstract Nausea and vomiting are among the most common postoperative complications and can occur after general, regional, or local anaesthesia.(i)Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are not only unpleasant an aesthetically displeasing to both the patients and their caretackers but when severe, may be associated with dehydration, electrolyte imbalance specially in children with prolonged preoperative fasting, tension on sutures, bleeding at the operative site, wound dehiscence, muscular fatigue and aspiration of vomitus into the tracheal tree.A more common result of PONV is a delayed discharge from the hospital leading to increased use of resources such as additional drugs, intravenous fluids and supplies attention from nurses and physicians, all of which have financial implications.PONV occur frequently after middle ear surgery with incidences as high as 80% when no prophylactic antiemetic drug is given. Many different antiemetic drugs are available for the prevention and management of PONV but commonly used antiemetic drugs can produce significant side effects e.g. sedation, hypotension and extrapyramidal symptoms. |
