Abstract Anemia, caused primarily by iron deficiency, is a common problem in both developed and developing countries. Iron deficiency is particulary prevalent in infants, children, adolescents and women of reproductive age.The anemia of chronic disorders is the most common caus: of anemia in hospitalized patients after iron deficiency, typically developing over several weeks in those with chronic infecticus, inflammatory or malignant disorders. The anemia is usually mild to moderate, the severity being approximately proportional to that of the chronic illness. The transierrin receptors piay a critical role in iron metabolism by precisely controlling the flow of transferrin-iron into body cells. The aims of the present study were to assess the utility of the serum transferrin receptor level in distinguishing the anemia of chronic disease (ACD) from iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and to study the correlation between the studied parameters transferrin receptor, transferrin, ferritin and serum iron. The present study included 10 patients with iron deficiency anemia, 30 patients with anemia of chronic diseases [lo patients with chronic liver disease, 10 patients with chroric renal disease and 10 patients with rheumatoid arthritis]. Beside 10 apparently healthy persons which were served as controls. |
