Abstract Splenectomy is used as a treatment for bleeding O~.v. in portal hypertension patients with chronic li~er disease. Portal vein thrombosis was observed to follow this operation in such patients. The portal system was studied in those patients pre and post operatively in order to discover the incidence of this complication. Clinical & laboratory investigations were done for all the patients (30 patients) as well as abdominal ultrasonography. Also superior mesenteric arterial portography was done for 13 patients. The incidence of portal vein thrombosis was found to be 35.8%. It is a high incidence. P.V.T is a complication of cirrhosis in splenectomized patients which is difficult to be diagnosed clinically & it should .be searched.for by sonography or angiography. It is related probably to st a sis in portal system because the laboratory data didn’t showed significant difference in patients with P.V.T. It can agravate the condition of portal hypertension, thus it is important to search for it in such patients. |
