SUMMARY
This work aimed at a study of some fossil woods found on the surface in the Western Desert of Egypt. Twelve specimens were collected from a Late Cretaceous area northwest of Kharga Oasis (Wadi El- lifiya) for this purpose. Transverse, longitudinal and radial thin—ground sections were prepared from all twelve specimens. Examination of a large number of cross, longitudinal and radial sections using a light microscope and camera, showed that they all belong to gymnosperms. However, only four specimens ; carrying nos.; Kh.L.2, Kh.L.3, Kh.L.10, Kh.L.11 were found to be well preserved and permit identification to specific level. Comparing the studied specimens with earlier species collected from Egypt and with many similar woods described in the literature it became clear that the four specimens represent new records to Egypt and to Science. They could be assigned to four genera Agathoxylon, Dadoxylon, Protopodocarpoxylon and Taxodioxylon. This is the first record of Agathoxylon, Protopodocarpoxylon and Taxodioxylon in Egypt, but Dadoxylon had been recorded earlier from different parts of Egypt. Also this is the first record of fossil Taxodiaceae in Egypt.
As a result of this work, four new species of fossil woods Agathoxylon lifiyii sp.nov. ,Dadoxylon khargaii sp.nov.,Protopodocarpoxylon aegyptiacum sp.nov.,Taxodioxylon oasisii sp.nov. have been added to the gymnosperm fossil wood flora of Egypt. This brings the number of Egyptian gymnosperm fossil wood species up to 11.
