Abstract

There is an increasing interest in the use of some herbal preparations reported in the Folklore medicine to have hypoglycemic activities.
One of these plants Balanities egyptica fruits (Mesocarp) which is collected from El-Wahat El-Kharga and Idfu-mersa-alam road, Egypt, where it is widely growing. It was subjected to experimental studies in the Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacognosy, Asssiut University on Boskat rabbits and it was proved that the aqueous extract of Balanites egyptica fruit (Mesocarp) exhibited a marked hypoglycemic activity of about (-42%) in comparison to other plants used in the study.
Complementary study was carried out in Hiroshima University, Japan, together with Faculty of Pharmacy, Assiut University to analyse the used aqueous extract to identify its contents of active ingredients and its possible hypoglycemic effect on streptozotocin induced diabetic mice. from to active fractions of this extract two new steroidal saponines were isolated and their structures were determined as 26-O-B-D- glucopyranosyl-(25R)-furost-5-ene-3B-22,26-triol-3-O-(1-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-2)-and its 22-methyl ether. In addition, two known saponins, 26-O-B-O-glucopyranosyl-(25R)-furost-5-ene-3B-22, 22-triol-3 and their methyl ether were isolated and identified.
