Abstract

The role of the immune system in liver disease is not only complex but also poorly understood. Substantial evidence implicates immunologic mechanisms in the pathogenesis of several hepatobiliary . diseases.Cytokines constitute a complex network of intercellular signaling molecules involved in cell to cell communication, inflammatory response amplification and immune response regulation. They coordinate physiologic and pathologic processes going on in the liver, such as liver growth and regeneration, inflammatory processes including viral liver disease, liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Moreover, potent proinflammatory cytokines play an important role on initiation, modulation, and perpetuation of the immune responses in the liver. The relationship among chronic hepatocellular damage, liver . inflammation and cirrhosis has not been clearly defined, but cytokines could be the common link between this complex pathological outcomes.
