Abstract

Neonatal sepsis remains one of the most important causes of mortality despite considerable programs in hygiene, introduction of new antimicrobial agents, and advanced measures for early diagnosis and treatment. The epidemiological data fiom the developing countries however, shows important differences in the incidence, risk factors, pattern and antimicrobial pathogens and mortality fiom that of the developed countries.Group B streptococcal disease is the most important cause of neonatal sepsis in Europe and North America, but there is preponderance of gram negative organism in tropical and developing countries. In our study the causative organisms were Klebsiella 37%, E-coli 24%, pseudomonas 22%,staphylococci 13% and streptococci 4%. Sepsis therefore continues to have significant clinical and financial implications and remains an area that attracts intense research interest. This study was carried out upon 50 neonates suffered fiom neonatal sepsis, all patients are full term and their post natal age ranged fiom 7-21 days, and their body weight at the time of admission was ranged fiom 1.800-3000gm. They were 32 males and 18 females. The control group compromised 15 healthy neonates taken randomly from follow up clinic of pediatric department. They were coming for routine check up. Their gestational age, sex, and body weight were matched with the patients group.
