Abstract

The present study was carried out to evaluate the influence of long term irrigation with polluted waters which differ in their sources of pollution on the content of heavy metals in tested soils and plants. Therefore seven polluted soil profiles were selected from Kafr El-Sheikh and El-Gharbia Governorates. All these soil profiles wcre divided into five layers (0-5 Cm), (5-10 Cm), (10-20 Cm), (20-40 Cm) and (40-60 Cm). Also, bottom sediments from El-Gharbia main drain (from different locations), Ebshan drain and Bahr Meet Yazeed were taken. The growing plants; cotton, rice, to~nato, corn, el-molokhia from some tested polluted soils were collected and tested for their heavy metals content. The chemical properties and heavy metals content of irrigation waters were done. ’I’he physical and chernicai characteristics of soil and bottom sedin~erlt samples were determined. Also, the available and total content of heavy mctals in these samples were determined. The distribution of heavy ~nctalsi n the tested soils and sediments and their mobility in relation to pH were estimated. Also, a sequential extractions for heavy metal fractions from the tested polluted soil samples and sediments were used to quantify the heavy metals content within the constituents of tested polluted samples. The release of tested heavy metals from some of pollutcd samples under equilibrium conditions was done. Also, an attempt was done to amelioration and rehabitation the availability of prescnt heavy metals in some of tested polluted soil samples.
