Abstract
Rheumatic mitral stenosis is still a common disease in our country, its has been treated surgically since long time through open or closed mitral commissurotomy. The development of percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty (PMV) created a new chance for patients with mitral stenosis to deal more safely and easily with their disease without exposure to the risk of cardiac surgery. This study aimed to find out the effect of PMV on right and left ventricular functions two days immediately after and three months later on after the procedure using Doppler tissue imaging as new, easy, accurate and noninvasive tool. from the period of May 2001 to December 2003, PMV was offered to 30 patients with severe mitral stenosis (mitral valve area < 1.1 cm2) that were in sinus rhythm. These were 25 females and 5 males with age ranged from 15-36 years and mean age of 23.70 5 years. Twenty normal disease fi-ee, age and sex matched subjects were included in our study as a control group. There were 12 females and 8 males with age ranged from 15 to 40 years, their mean age 24.37k6.94 years.
