Abstract Varicella (chickenpox) and zoster(shingles) are distinct clinical entities caused by a single member of the herpesvirus family, the varicella-zoster virus(VZV). The particular clinical manifestations of these two diseases are due to differences in the host and in the circumstances of infection, not to differences in their etiologic agent.
