Abstract Violence against psychiatric nursing staff has been documented as a serious occupational health concern and safety issues. It is considered the most pressing problem. Although psychiatric violence has long been identified as a clinical problem, it is only in the recent years, that it has become an occupational health hazard-posing particular risk to psychiatric nursing staff. Therefore, the aim of this study was to design, implement an educational / training program and evaluate its effectiveness on psychiatric nurses’ skills, knowledge, and attitude in order to help them cope with violence of violent of violent patients. A quasi experimental design was used on the study sample which consisted of 60 nurses in total. Each of the subgroups consisted of 30 nurses. The experimental group was subjected to the developed educational training program and other 30 were considered as a control group. The study was conducted at the inpatient psychiatric mental health department at Assiut University Hospital and Ministry of Health Mental Health hospital. Sociodemographic data sheet and Violence Assessment Tools (VAT) were developed and used by the investigator. The (VAT) included three main parts related to: assessment of nurses’ knowledge of violence and violent patients, nurses’ attitude towards violence and assessment of nurses’ practical skills to cope and intervene with violence. Results revealed that, nurses who attended to the educational / training program showed significant improvement in their knowledge, attitude and skills. It was recommended that the continued nursing inservice training program should be used as structural nursing intervention to improve nurses knowledge skills and performance in psychiatric settings and their attitude toward violent patients. |
