Abstract

Epilepsy is a condition characterized by recurrent (two or more) epileptic seizures which are unprovoked by any immediate identifiable cause. It is either generalized or focal Regarding its aetioligy, it may be of known cause (symptomatic or secondary), idiopathic (primary) with unknown cause or cryptogenic (presumed to be symptomatic, but the aetiology is not known). The present study was conducted on selected 45 epileptic children who were referred to Radiology and Imaging department at Tanta university hospital from Pediatric, Neurology, neurosurgery departments and outpatients clinic. They were 25 males and 20 females with their age ranged from one month to 18 years (mean age = 8.2 +/- 5 years). Our patients were subjected to full history taking, full clinical examination and imaging studies by MRI using a 1.5 tesla MRI device. It was found that the most common seizure type in our study was generalized tonic-clonic seizure (48.9%). Partial seizure with secondary generalization was seen in eight cases (17.8%), simple partial seizure was seen in six cases (13.3%), myoclonic fit was seen in six (13.3%) and complex partial seizure was seen in 3 cases (6.7%).Twenty three cases (51.1%) had one or more associated neurological disorders in the form of mental retardation, delayed developmental milestones, cerebral palsy, headache, Cerebllar dysarthria, distributed consciousness, hemiparesis and hypotonia. Whole twenty two cases(48.9%) had no associated neurological disorder.
