The Research Summary in English
The subject of values is the focus of concern for many disciplines, such as philosophy, religion, education, economics, sociology and psychology. It may even overlaps will all of these areas of knowledge.
The reason why educationalists are interested in the theme of values is that it is directly connected with the goals sought to be achieved by education through the learner.
In the final analysis, any educational objectives are just an expression of value judgements, whether such expression was conscious unconscious.
The importance of values is evident in all aspects of life, economic, political and educational.
It touches on all human relationships of all forms and shapes, and is a social necessity that is bound to exist in any organized life style.
While every society has a frame work shaped by its own moral, economic, political and spiritual values, the Islamic nation has a value context based on the sources of Islamic legislation, namely the Holy Quran and Sunna (the prophet teachings). The latter are the most important sources of Islamic values. But there are other sources, such as consensus, the absolute interest and custom. Such sources must not deviate from the principles of Shari’a and its categorical judgements.
While interest and custom provide rich sources of the judgements necessary for handlling the changing conditions of life and defining the different values of that life, this research attempts to define the educational values presented in Al - Aqad’s writings on the genius of Islamic figures (Abkariat Al - Aqad). Al - Aqad is a great contemporary writer and thinker, who made considerable contributions to literature, and Islamic studies and research. Of concern to him also was the building of the Muslim personality.
There are several considerations underpinning the researcher’s decision to study educational values in the series of Al - Aqad’s writings on the genius of Islamic figures (Abkariat Al - Aqad). The Islamic persons in question had an influential history which affected the life of Muslims particularly and mankind generally. Another factor is the way Al - Aqad approached the analysis of these figures. He did not pay attention to
their biography or to recent events Rather, his concern was to highlight the values and traits embodied by those genius people.
He shed light on their stances, ethics and the principles that governed their actions and behavior. The rising generations should, we believe, take the values preached by Al - Aqad in these writings as an example worthy of following.
The research objective:
This research aims to realise the following objectives:
*The definition of the concept of values and their importance, with emphasis on the characteristics of Islamic values.
*The identification of educational values as presented in Al - Aqad’s works on genius Islamic figures (Abkariat Al - Aqad). These values permeate all aspects of mundane life. And because they are drawn from the life of prophet Mohamed and his close followers, they could contribute to creating and developing an integrated personality for the Muslim person.
*This research also seeks to determine the purports of these values and related suggestions that could guide our educational work.
The research methodology:
The research relies on the analytical descriptive methodology. It is also fundamentally based on the content analysis approach, which aims to classify a given content quantitatively, in the light of an interval system designed to provide appropriate data, for specific hypotheses pertaining to this content.
The research procedures:
The research consists of nine chapters as follows: Chapter One: the research’s general framework.
Chapter Two: Al - Aqad: his life, scientific contributions and the factors which influenced his thinking and personality.
Chapter Three: value in language and terminology, the importance of values, values classifications and a description of the characteristics of Islamic values.
Chapter Four: Two dimensions were dealt with:
1) analysis procedures 2) the values of spiritual education.
Chapter Five: The values of moral education. Chapter Six: The values of mental education. Chapter Seven: The values of social education. Chapter Eight: The values of political education. Chapter Nine: Educational applications and findings. The research findings:
The findings arrived at by the study can be classified into three types:
- Findings that can be concluded from Al - Aqad’s life and career.
- Findings related to values in general.
-Findings related to the educational values drawn from Al - Aqad’s ”genius Islamic figures” series (Abkariat Al - Aqad).
*The findings that can be concluded from Al - Aqad’s life and career:
-Al - Aqad is an example of a self - taught and self -made man.
- Educational degrees are not the only criterion whereby individuals and their knowledge.
- Family plays a key role in educating and bringing up children to cherish excellence, science and faith.
*findings related to values in general: - Values have a role in selecting the right persons for certain professions, such as
clergymen, politicians, psychologists, sociologists and others who are entrusted with teaching people good values and telling them what is right and what is wrong.
- The Islamic values are a life methodology which streamlines people activities and charts their course of action so that every individual adjusts to himself and to the
group he is dealing with, eventually ending up as an open - minded person whose
concerns extend far beyond homeland and nationalism to encompass mankind at large.
*Findings related to the educational values drawn from Al - Aqad’s ”genius Islamic figures” series (Abkariat Al - Aqad).
- Sixty two values were drawn from the series in question and classified into five categories as follows:
Spiritual, moral, mental, social and political values. The researcher drew the following conclusions:
- The spiritual values provide comfort and peace of mind to man by firming up faith, developing the religious conscience and the actual practice of religious rites and the different virtues.
- The spiritual values aim to bring up Muslims to fear God’s wrath, either in public or in private, and to exercise self - criticism.
Spiritual values protect individuals from the different psychiatric disorders that could arise if such values are ignored.
Spiritual values aim to teach Muslim youngsters that while Islam is a religion that advocates peace and safeguarding others’ rights, it is a religion of pride and justice It does not approve of living in humiliation and advocates fighting aggression and enslavement through jihad (crusade).
The Moral values:
- The study concluded that moral values are consistent with the Islamic faith, i. e. with the previously mentioned spiritual values.
- The moral values aim to teach good manners, self - discipline, the ability to distinguish between good and evil, the advocation of virtues and shunning of sins and ill - manners. Examples of such values are: telling the truth, justice, generosity, honesty, bravery, pride, modesty, mercy ... etc.
The Mental values:
- Al - Aqad’s ”genius Islamic figures” series (Abkariat Al - Aqad) is replete with mental values which are concerned with educating the mind. Chief among these are: elocution, rhetoric, learning and teaching, reasoning, intelligence and shrewdness, persuation by proof, objectivity ... etc.
- The above mental values aim to direct man to following, inquiring about and even experimenting with all the global events, incidents and phenomena that come to his attention.
- Mental values aim to bring up the younger generations of Muslims to practice the different methods of thinking, since thinking is an Islamic duty.
The Social values:
- These aim to teach cooperation and loving others. To realise this goal, the researcher recommends that there should be cooperation among home, school and all society institutions.
- The social values are concerned with the social domestic manners, such as showing affection to children, taking care of them, offering them gifts and playing with them.
The political values:
- The ”Shura” is among the basic constituents required for building an advanced society in all fields.
- Islam came to offer freedom, in all forms, to humanity in its entirety.
- The value of labour should be emphasized and employment opportunities be extended to youths in trade, industry and agriculture.
- Unemployment and begging should be discouraged and disparaged.
- Political values aim to prepare the citizen to exercise public affairs through awareness and participation.
