PREFACE Many researches proved that the teacher has a great influence on his pupils.He is considered the key element in a successful learning situation.Effective teacher depends on some essential competencies which appear through his performance inside the class. The teacher plays an important part in using the textbook.When the book is effectively used, certain fundamental values are to be expected, such as continuity, precision, order and proportion in the school program. If properly Used, the text book can be a valuable aid to learning.If the teacher keeps in —mind that no single books can meet adequately the reading needs of all pupils in the class, the text book can be a useful tool in teaching social studies. Research Problem: The problem of this study can be expressed in the following main question.What are the points of strength and weakness in the performance of the social teacher in using the fifth grade text book? The following are sub-questions : 1-What are the performance forms that the teacher should have in using the school textbook? 2-How can the teacher performance in using the text book in teaching be measured?3-What is the teacher’s level of the performance forms necessary for using the text book?IDOCIDURES OF THE STUDY Firstly :Determining performance forms that the social studies teacher should have in using the text book, through :1-Reviewing previous studies.2-Analyzing and studying the lists of the teacher’s performance in teaching that are prepared previously.3-Observing the performance of the social studies teacher a sample who are efficient in using the text book in teaching.4-Studying the functions of the text book educationally in the field of the social studies in this study level.Secondly :Building on observation checklist including a list of performance forms that teachers should have in using the text book in its primary form; then reviewing and 2 validating it by a jury members specialized in the field of teaching social studies.Thirdly : Observing the performance of a sample of teachers in using the text book of fifth year, Basic education.Frourthly : Determining the points of strength and weakness in the performance of the study sample.fifthly : Recording the results and statistical treatment. Sixthly : Recommendation and suggestions.I- TM:ETAT = ON OF THE STUDY 1-Evaluating the performance of a sample of the social studies teachers who spent four years in teaching in this level.2-Choosing thirty teachers from social studies teachers.3-Observing the performance of teachers, at least 5 periods for each teacher. 4-Using the manual recording and sound records in observing the performance of the teachers.The Research Tool An observation checklist designed by the researcher to observe the teacher’s performance in Using the textbook. 3 E5 I G N I F I C. 11.1`4 C E ()I-- THE E5Z-LJI) -Y - 1-It presents a comprehensive listing of the necessary performance of the social studies teachers in using the text book. 2-Enlightening the teacher of his performance strength and weakness; hence takes part in the development process. 3-Encreasing the interest in the text book and increasing the effectiveness of its usage as an educational important mean. 4-This study benefits both the teacher and the supervisor inspector in finding an instrument to judge the performance and evaluation in a subjective manner.The Research Results : Analyzing the results, the following points are concluded :1-Social studies teachers’ performance level in using the textbook is very low. 2-Social studies teachers’ performance (in particular ) in using visual aids included in the text book is very low.3-Neglecting both silent and oral reading.This due to 1) The text book performance forms attached to the text book in its usage requires theoretical background and practice.4 2)Teacher’s guide book is not available. 3)Deficiency in the text book form leads to neglecting it inside the classroom.4)These kinds of performance forms need continuous reading. 5)No guide lines for using the text book effectively.6)Teaching aids are not available with the text book.7)Neglecting competencies. styles in evaluating the teacher.8)There is a great gap between those specialists in the field and the supervisors.In the light of these findings, the researcher Presented his conclusions , recommendation and suggestions. for further research.
