Abstract Substitution is a widespread phenomenon in human language in general. It is very much pervasive in everyday conversation. A study of substitution is really indispensable for any adequate description of a given language. Therefore, the aim of this current study is to investigate the phenomenon of substitution in both English and Arabic spoken discourse. It attempts to utilize the premises and principles established in English tradition and apply them to the phenomenon of substitution in Colloquial Cairene Arabic to be able to shed light on the similarities and differences between the two languages. The main aim of this study is to investigate the use of substitution in conversation. In this respect, the study attempts to identify the different linguistic forms employed by substitution in both Everyday Conversational English (ECE) and Colloquial Cairene Arabic (CCA). Besides, it presents the discourse functions of these linguistic forms of substitution. Thus, it is necessary to have an empirical investigation of the pragmatics of substitution. Such an investigation requires observing, describing, and analyzing how people create, organize, use, and manage substitution in spoken discourse. |
