Abstract

This survey was designed to assess both the dental health status and treatment needs of students at the two secondary school in Marsa Matrouh governorate. The population of this study consists of all pupils enrolled in two secondary schools one for males and other for females. The total number of pupils included was 634. Each pupil was examined for dental caries and other oral health problems using sichle probe and plane mirror and natural 1ight. Aspecial form of examination chart was designed for collection of data. Dental examina¬ tion was conducted by the reasearcher. Another question¬ naire was designed to collect the required information regarding the pupils under study including socioeconomic data, as well as data related to utilization of dental services and practices of dental hygiene in terms of using toothbrush. Results of this study revealed the following: I. Dental caries: The caries prevalence of the pupils was low, 60.6 of pupils were caries free. The mean number of decayed surfaces was 1.27 for males and 1.67 for females. 2. Periodontal condition: Most of the pupils had bad oral hygiene (41.3) had , soft deposits, (45.0) had calculus and (42.1) had severe gingivitis. Girls had better oral hygiene and periodontal conditions than boys. According to the socioeconomic level there was no consistent difference in relation to the periodontal condition. ~ 3. Due to the increased the level of fluroide in the water supply (ground water) only 39.6 had normal flurosis. Degree of flurosis was associated with the longer residence in Marsa Matrouhe governorate. Treatment needs as assessed by examination. . 1. Caries: About (52.8) were not in need for any treat¬ ment form. ~ Filling was the most frequently needed form of treatment being the only required must for 22.1 pupils. About 10.4 needed filling for one surface, and 4.7 for two surfaces and 24.3 for more than two surfaces. Those needing extraction only were (2.8), those needing prosthetic restoration were 7.8 and those needing more than ORe type of treatment as combination of filling and prosthetic restoration (12.5), and (2.5) needed filling extraction and prosthetic restoration. ’I 2. Periodontal treatment need: Out oC the 634 pupils, 54.6 needed oral hygiene instruction only, 42.4 needed oral hygiene instruction plus prophylaxis, and 3.0needed periodontal therapy. 3. Dental services: It was found that the average number oC dental visits per year for each pupil was 0.85 visit. Female utilized dental services more than males. Although about 36.9 had pain only 56.8 oC those who suCCered Crom pain v1sited the dentist. Concerning the practice of dental service in the Corm of using toothbrush, those who reported irregular brushing were (9.9) and 4.7 never brushed their teeth females brushed their teeth more oCten than males.
