Abstract Early investigators realized four potential advantages of MRI over conventional imaging techniques in the pelvis; 1. It offered direct multiplanar imaging, which is essential for clear depiction of organ anatomy and tissue planes in the pelvis. 2. Intrinsic soft tissue contrast of pelvic organs appeared to be high with MRI because of the multiple parameters of tissue proton relaxation that contribute to the MR signal. 3. The unique characteristics of moving protons on MR images promised unequivocal identification of vessels without necessarily using intravascular contrast material. 4. MRI appeared to be safe in pregnant patients. |
