Abstract

Depression affects all people at any age race and economic status and more common in women than in men. Depression affects all cognitive and behavioral aspects, social and communication skills. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the nature and scope of social and communication skills of depressed patient, to determine the relationship between depression and social skills, between severity of depression and communication skills. A descriptive correlation design was used in the study sample which was consisted of 50 depressed patients as a study group and 50 diabetic patients as a control group. The study was conducted at inpatient psychiatric unit, and out patient medical clinic, at Assiut University Hospital. Socio demographic data sheet was developed and used by the investigator in addition to social skills assessment scale, Communication skills assessment scale, and Hamilton rating scale for depression. Result revealed that, depression is more common in female than, in males in rural aijea than in urban area. Depressed patient have decrease social and communication skills in comparing to control group. There were a negative relations between severity of depression, social skills, and communication skills and a positive relation between social and communication skills. Depression has direct effect on social and communication skills in comparing to other diseases. It was recommended that, social skills training program should be provided to depressed patient to improve social and communication skills.
