Abstract

Sepsis is an acute life threatening condition . It involves the complex immunologic response to an infectious stimulus
Sepsis & its sequelae represent a continuum of clinical and pathophysiologic severity . The degree of severity may independently affect prognosis . Sepsis , sepsis induced hypotension and septic shock can adversely affect prognosis and may lead to death .
The mediator network of response to sepsis consists of the interaction of cytokines, adhesion molecules, arachidonic acid metabolites, platelet-activating factor , oxygen free radicals, nitric oxide, complement and other mediators all of which include hypotension, myocardial depression, capillary leak and inflammation . The cytokine cascade is stimulated by endotoxins,
T N F α and chemokines . Some cytokine receptors are shedded into the circulation and so called soluble cytokine receptors . Arachidonic acid metabolites include leukotrienes A4, B4, C4 , and E4 , lipoxin A4 and B4, prostaglandins G2, H2 , F2 , F12 , E2 & I2 and thromboxanes .
