Abstract The main purpose of this research is to study the impact of the arid features on the settlements systems in the egyptian aird lands. up to the research`s present state of knowledge, no empirical studies have been conducted to examine the direct impact of aridity on settlement systems. the features of aridity have been widely discussed but without mentioning their direct impact on settlement systems. the lack of research and consequently, the absence of knowledge on the unique urban planning process required in a stressful hot dry climate, lead manr planners to transplant planning methods of urban systems from non-arid regions to arid zones without much of an attempt to make the proper adjustment. In favor of this purpose, two hypotheses are developed. the first hypothesis is that there are unique fdeatures of arid lands which are completely different from those of humid lands such as water scarcity, harsh climate, remoteness, and limited resources. the second is that those unique arid features affect both the individual settlements and their system and are different from the humid settlement systems in some aspects such as the function, size, interaction among settlements, and the hierarchical diversification. |
