Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the degree of satisfaction among patient in medical and surgical units of the Gamal Abd-EI-Nasser hospital, one of the Health Insurance Organization hospitals in Alexandria, as well as to identify factors that contribute to patient satisfaction or dissatisfaction. The study also explored the importance of patient satisfaction to the nursing personnel. The patients sample included discharges of tha medical and surgical units during one month. The nurses sample included all nurses in these units. The method used for both patients and nurses was based on that adapted by Nichols (86) for measuring attitude 0 Results of the study indicate that most of patients were generally satisfied with the nursing care provided at the hospital totalling to 77.46 of patients. Patients were either dissatisfied or showed a low degree of satisfaction with. the educational area of nursing care. The percentage of patient satisfied and patient dissatisfied was almost equal by the direct and the indirect methods. Many factors that could affect patient satisfaction were invistigated , such sociodemographic characteristics, length of stay, and nursing unit. Some patients complained causes of dissatisfaction as inappropriate nurse - patient relationship’ , inadequate bed making, noise, lack ot adequate attention tor patients nursing problems and inappropriate distribution ot medication. When the nurses attitude about the importance of patient satisfaction were studied ~ it has been found that patient satisfaction was weakly important or not important according to most of the nurses in the hospital. The main factors which influence the importance of patient satisfaction to nurses were the nurses administrative position, ~he type of units whether medical or surgical and years of experience. The above findings were discussed in light of similar previaus studies and local circumstances and suitable recommendations has been forwarded.
