Abstract

The aim of the present investigations is to lower the cost of the soil removal from the Suez-Canal water way which will help in increased the national income. To obtain low production costs in using cutter dredgers requires high performance level of the equipment , shortest downtimes, and lowest maintenance costs. The first step to this end is the suitable cutter head tooth. The design of a new tooth adapter system for cutter-heads and the selection of the right steel – quality gives the tooth a high wear – resistance and at the same time a good weld ability for the adapter. The tooth geometry and the tooth position against the soil have been listed in a general way and show the dredger man the relationship between cutting velocity and circumferential speed for an efficient use of the teeth. When determining and circumferential speed for an efficient use of teeth. When determining the price of a quotation for a dredge job, in the inquiry stage communally it is not usual to specify a particular design of a cutter – head with tooth system. If the contractor is lucky enough to be awarded the contact for the dredge job the cuter-head to be used is one of the many important factors to be considered. After all, the cutter-head with its teeth is the tool by which the solid soil is dislodged. For a design had to be developed at short notice and subsequently to be used directly in operation.
Last but not least, the economy of a dredging site, apart from the selection of the right tooth system, depends also on a good communication between the research and purchasing departments and the production management on the dredging site. Soil specified in a tender, a particular cutter-head. The present study is conducted in the following manner:
1- By studying the soil characteristics in the canal water way to know the natural of the soil along the water course and to define the physical properties of the different areas(Sand – Clay – Rock).
2-Using the available dredgers used to dredge the rock and the soil either the subsidiary or un subsidiary of the Suez- Canal authority.
3-Conducting actual experiments to research the way teeth product and it effectiveness on modifications the producer to settlement feasible teeth for digging among the easy cosmopolitan.
4-By conducting actual experiments to find the relation-ships between the tooth length and actual cutter angles and the influence of this relation-ship on the rate of performance of the cutter teeth.
5-To determine specific relations for teeth-wear analysis especially for the southern part of the Suez-Canal (S.P.T).
6-Derivation of a theoretical model in order to assess the under – water soil torque. A comparison between theory and field experiments is made and development of the cutter tooth design has being used now.
The important conclusions are :
1-The rate of production depends on the natural of soil to be designed the cutter form and the type of teeth used.
2-The tooth type pick – point assist in concentrating the cutting force.
3-The forged teeth type seems to perform better than the casted teeth type from wear rate and material loss points of view.
4-Changing the original cutter teeth to another one of greater size in order to reduce its wear leads to a greater wear and fracture of teeth. This unfavorable and unexpected result.
5-A relation between the number of worn teeth for one meter cbic of soil removed was found.
6-A comparison between theory and field experiments are made.
7-Developing the present cutter teeth design has improved the production or cutting per cubic meter after torque calculation in two and three-dimensional.
