Abstract

Proper cadastral mapping in Egypt began in 1897 with the estabishment of egyptian surveying authority ESA. by the ned of the year 1907 all the cultivated area in egypt about 6 million fed.Was covered with cadastral maps of sclae 1 : 2500.The cadastral survey was done by using the system of theodolite, traversing controlled by triangulation points, the plotting of holding in the field, the calculation of the area of each holding for the maps sheets, and the compilation of the lad-registers on certain forms.
During 1971-1921, a commission on registration of title to land was setup. The aim was to reform the method of land transfer and recording the real right as had been recongnized.
The increase in the total area of cultivated lands to about 7.5 million fed and the rapidly escalating need for update and reliable land information by both public and private use institutions has forced ESA to look for non-traditional procedures for cadastral mapping. This was accomplished by the development of modern equipment, digital theodolites, electronic distance measuring equipment, and lastly total stations.
In the frame of the egytian - german technical cooperation, Apilot project was started in 1995 to rebuilt the cadastre system in egypt. The project selected the real time kinematic RTK-GPS accompained with digital plane table DPT system to be the applied tools for this purpose. The project has higher productivity, more confidence since maps are reviewwd in the field and offers solution for easily updating cadastre maps.
Another leading Egyptian - American project produced cadastral maps for the Egyptian governorates using GPS and photogrammetry, but the project ad to use terrestrial total stations and traditional methods for demarcation of land boundaries and recommended to use photogrammetry for planning of large new areas.
The photogrammetric department in the egyptian surveying authority ESA produces 1:2500 base maps and conveys them to the governorates to accomplish the cadastral work. The maps are produced from aerial photography with scale 1:10000 and 1300m flying height. The main irrigation system, bridges, roads, tracks and urban blochk are well identified in these maps.
Different studies show that the cadastre in Egypt needs integration between different techniques to put the suitable system for each of land use category concerning with value, size, area and social issues. It is a must to set the specification of cadastre map production determining the needed accuracy for each category and how the survey will be done by suitable technique.
