Abstract

The process of selecting a route location can be accomplished in five steps :
1-reconnaissance survey, either from field airborne, or spacer borne platforms, to determine f ensible route, 2-selection of the best route, 3- carring ground surveying work, 4- location of the selected route, 5-staking the designed route on the ground.
The location of a highway requires the study of many factors which are grouped under two basic subject areas. geometric design and economics. These areas are considered very important to engineers whose work in highway planning.
The factors that governed the geometric design are ; topography, lenght, width, number of horizontal and vertical curves, grades along routes..etc.On the other hand, the economic factors are : topography, geology, soils, drainage, vegetation, land use, construction material ...etc.
Remote sensing techniques have been used to provide some information for most of these factors. The objective of this research is to develop a new technique for selecting the best route from digital terrain at reflectance models with the aid of the computer which saves the time required for extracting data.
The study area is located in south sinai, dahab region, and covered about 85km.
The area is extendes a few kilometers along the Akaba gulf and is covered by large mountains expect shore region which contians an alluvial fan and a strip of moderate slope terrain.
Photogrammetric stereo plotter wild-A10, was used to determined the elevation of some points along the center line of each highway route selection. The base map of the terrain heights is then digitized to find the geographical location for each point along each route selection with respect to the chosen origin.
Aerial photograph that covered the study area was scanned and the resulted digital image was divided into a matrix af small regions, called pixels. Each pixel has a side of 28.8x 46m.The tone of each pixel were represented by a numerical value to 15 gray level or data number DN value. The planetary data system PDS image display IMDISP program version 7.8, established by martin etal.1992, was used to determined the digital reflectance model DRM for each route selection.
Surfer program version 4.0 established by gloden softwareinc, 1989, was used to create perspective plot for gray shade and terrain height differences along each route selection.
Remote sensing techniques offer a new tool for highway planning and location surveys. Moreover, they are highly reliable and economical to highway route selection.
