Abstract

Two field experiments were carried out at the Experimental Station Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University at Shalakun, Kalubia Govarnorate, during two successive growing seasons 1991/1992 and 1992/1993. The aim of this work was to study the response of berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum, L. Var meskaoy) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorm, var. Caramba) mixture to different fertilization treatments. Berseem-ryegrass mixture was cultivated at a rate of 20 and 8 kg / fed respectively. Seeds were sown at two rows berseem followed by two rows ryegrass alternatively, at distance of 10 cm, between rows. The studied fertilization treatments were nitrogen fertilization i.e. 0.0, 30, 60 and 90.0 kg N/fed and foliar fertilizer i.e. 0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 kg/fed. Samples were taken at each cut for determining growth characters, yield measurements and chemical determinations. The important results can be summarized as follows: Effect of nitrogen fertilizer: 1-Results generally revealed that increasing nitrogen rates had no effect on all studied growth characters as well as the forage yield of berseem this was true for all cuts of both seasons. Meanwhile, the response of ryegrass to nitrogen fertilizer was more pronounced and greatly different from that of bersEem plants. Increasing nitrogen rates to the berseem/ ryegrass mixture. Increased plant height, number of tillers, stems and leaves fresh and dry weight as well as fresh and dry forage yield/ feddan of ryegrass. These increases in most cases were great enough to reach the significant levels. 2-increasing nitrogen fertilizer up to 90.0 kg/fed.
