Abstract

The annaul consumption of adible oils in Egypt is about 683000 tons of which only about one fifth is localy produced. In 1989/1990, 517500 tons of vegetable oils were imported to fulfil the national needs which are increasing year after year. Meanwhile, although several oil crops are, or can be grown successfully in Egypt, they do not supply more then 20 percent of the domestic production of edible oils. The main source for oil extraction is cotton seeds. The goal of the present study was to adopt some agricultural practices, namely sowing dates, planting distances and nitrogenous and organic fertilization for growing sunflower under Ismailai Governorate conditions. The local cultivar Maiak and some American hybrids were applied in this investigation.
