Abstract

In this study, a complete simulation of Kennedy class I partially edentulous case with mucosa covering the free end saddle area and the abutment tooth with its root covered by periodontal ligament and seated in the cast. In addition, a complete simulation of the partial denture metallic framework and all its components was made. Two identical models were created. The only difference between the two models was the retentive arm. For Model 1 I bar clasp as infrabulge clasp was used, while for Model 2 reverse circlet clasp was used as supra bulge clasp. Extreme care was made in the dimensions for the components of the partial denture. This simulation was made in order to compare the stresses exerted by the two clasps on the supporting structures of the denture.
A static load of 450 N was applied axially on the denture base on the second premolar, first molar and second molar areas.
The stresses on the buccal and lingual plates of bone around the abutment teeth and on the ridge were collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed.
The results revealed no statistically significant difference between the stresses exerted by I bar or reverse circlet clasp on the supporting structures of the abutment tooth. However high stresses were noticed on the ridge in both models, but it was higher in case of I bar, which is statistically significant.
