Abstract

Fluoride is an inorganic chemical species that is ubiquitous in our environment. Human are exposed to fluoride via many sources, including flouridated water, medicines, pesticides, insecticides, fertilizer residues, dental products, beverages and food.
Flouride is often called a double-edged sword. Flouride in small doses has remarkable prophylactic influence on the dental system by inhibiting the dental caries while in higher doses it causes dental and skeletal fluorosis.
NaF had been tested in fertility studies in several species of laboratory animals. Some studies indicated no effect on reproductive function and development. whereas others revealed that exposure to NaF causes reproductive toxic effects. So the effect of fluoride on reproductive functions are not fully understood, and reported findings are conflicting.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the toxic effect of fluoride on the reproductive system of male and female albino rats.
In order to fulfill this aim, the following was done:
Eighty adult albino rats, forty males (group A) and forty females (group B) were used in this study. Each group was subdivided into four subgroups (Control group (C), group I, II, and III). The control group, group I, II, and III received 2ml distilled water, 20mg NaF /kg body weight in 2ml distilled water, 30 mg NaF /kg body weight in 2ml distilled water and 40mg NaF /kg body weight in 2ml distilled water respectively by oral route for eight weeks duration.
