Abstract

Gastrointestinal disorders tend to be more common and severe in diabetics compared with the non diabetic population (Antwi et al, 2003). The pathogenesis of these gastrointestinal symptoms remains poorly defined (Bytzer et al, 2001), and although there is evidence of impairment of anorectal function, no correlation has been documented between the presence of either peripheral or autonomic neuropathy and the severity of anorectal dysfunction in diabetes mellitus (Epanomeritakis et al, 1999). The present study was undertaken to assess the anorectal function in a series of consecutive unselected patients with type 2 diabetes, irrespective to the presence or absence of anorectal symptoms, by anorectal manometry and to correlate the findings with duration of disease and the presence of autonomic or peripheral neuropathy and microangiopathy. Thirty-eight unselected type 2 male diabetic patients were included in this study. Their age ranged from 40-70 years (mean + SE of 55.39 + 1.30 years). They were divided into two groups according to the duration of the disease: Group A comprised 18 patients with duration < 10 years, and group B comprised 20 patients with duration? 10 years.
Patients with a history, endoscopic, laboratory, sonographic, or clinical evidence of pancreatic, liver, and other gastrointestinal diseases.
