Abstract

It is a well known fact that a single season’s record of the , succession of pollen grains which invade the atmosphere of any given locality furnishes valuable information to the medical allergists. The aim of this thesis is to determine the different kinds of pollen grains frequented in the atmosphere of Alexandria during year 1981. This investigation includes a description of the topography of Alexandria and the meteorological data during this period. The samples were taken for 24 hours above the roof of the High Institute of Public Healthi The results of the systematic analysis of the daily pollen catch throughout the year are summarized as follows: 1. The dominant pollen grains in Alexandria during the year 1981 were those related to families Solanaceae, Umbeillefera, Gramineae and the genera Eucalyptus sp., Trifolium sp. They constituted’ more mor~ than 85 of the. total pollen catch, collected during the whole. year. Of minor importance are those Urtica, Rumex, Phoenix, Cupressus, salix, Plantaqo, Acacia and members related to families Cucurbitaceae, Compositae, Cruciferae and Chenopod­ iaceae. 2. The total air-borne pollen fluctuated very rapidly from day to day even at the height of the season. The individual pollen species behaved in the same way. 3. Pollen concentrations were appreciable during the months May to September with two peaks in June and September. 4. The air of Alexandria was almost pollen free during the months January, November and December. 5. Rise in temperature and lowering of relative humidity were accompanied by rise in pollen catch as long as the wind velocity was high and the prevailing wind was north west. The most apparent conclusion to be withdrawn from the present work is that pollen grains concentration in the atmosphere of Alexandria varies enormously from day to day as well as from one time of the day to another according to weather conditions, and flowering habits of I the dominant plants. Therefore every community should have its seasonal atmospheric pollen accurately determiAed and recorded in a reday available form for the inspection of prospective visitors who may be allergies or for physicians who wish to learn the most favourable places to which they may direct their patients
