Abstract

The overall purpose of this ztudy was to find out the relationship between the nursing curriculum content of the High Institute for -Nursing, Cairo University and job performance of its graduates. The study aimed also at investigating graduatets Medical Administrators and nursing directors expectations of performance. It was assumed that a discrepancy exist between graduates academic preparation and both their perform ance and their supervisors expectations of performance~ The main premise of this study was that discrepancy oould be overcomed, if better cooonunication exist bet ween eduoational staff and practice setting administra tors ooncerning baccalaureate nursing graduates per formance. Moreover, effectiveness of the curriculum in preparing nurses consistent with society needs depends on oon ~ouenoy between what is taught, what is expected and what is performed. It was hoped also that the study would provide information that might be useful to educational staff in appraising their graduates performance in relation ~ to curriculum objectives and if necessary making curr iculum revision accordingly. To investigate the relationship between graduates \ academic preparation and there on the job performance a nursing perfonnance checklist was constructed whioh consisted of 142 nursing behavior items that are der ived from the High Institute for Nursing Cairo under , graduate nursing eurriculum as well as a 20 questions demographio data questionnaire which include questions regarding gradua tes opinion of adequacy of their under’ graduates academic preparation. The nursing behavior items were determined thrOU~l analysis of the nursing courses objectives, outlines and content, based on current literature in conjunc tion with the Ministry of Health Job Description for Nurses. In order to investigate the frequency with which graduates perform the nursing behavior items in their on-the-job performanoe, a soale was developed of three responses to investigate whether eaoh ~ehavior item is done by the graduate daily, frequently or sometimes. Two more responses were added to measure if the behav ior item was taught or not during the graduate academio prepara t ion. In order to investigate supervisors expectations of performance, the same tool was used to explore super visors agreement on the behavior items as being essen ’tial components of baccalaureate graduates academic prepara t i on. Moreover. the relationship between super visors expeotations and graduates performance were test~ ed through comparison between the two using appropriate statistical measures. The total sample of this study included 68 baccal aureate nursing graduates of the High Institute for Nursing Cairo University, 18 medical administrators and/or medical heads of department and 9 nursing service administration directors. These 95 subjects were employed in different health settings which belonged to four different health agen ~ , cies i.e. universities, ministry of health, curative organizations and Army within Cairo where all Cairo University High Institute for Nursing graduates were found to be employed. Thus meeting the criteria estab lished by the researcher to include all baccalaureate nursing graduates who work within the health settings in Cairo at the time of conducting this study. The data collection was done through the use of the ehecklist and questionnaire using the interview method. Data yield by this technique were then analy zed by the computer system in mean score and percen tages forms. Then comparison between curriculum con tent and both graduates performance and supervisors expectations were made through the use of one way analy sis of variance at 5 level of significance and thr ough the use of simple correlation technique at P 0.01 and P < 0 .05 . The findings of the study showed that no discrep aney exist between graduates academic preparation and supervisors expectations. Moreover, no discrepancy exist between graduates academic-preparation and their on-the-job performance. In addition graduates expre ssed satisfaction with their academic preparation. How ever, as graduates expressed, more emphasis is needed to be placed on the curriculum considering content, in some areas specially intensive care unit and operating theatre experiences, time coverage and student inter est and freedome to take decision within their limits as student s .. Besides, emphasis is needed to be placed on stud ents experience of utilization of the nursing process as an intellectual method to identify patients needs and problems and to go through it, step by step to satisfy needs and to solve his problems. More emphasis on leadership preparation and devel oping self actualization and assertive behavior of stud ents is also needed. As regards graduates performance, findings indic ated that in general, graduates performance within the four identified areas of care is satisfactory. However~ enviro~.ent and physical facilities care area holds the , - highest mean score, patient/family care area seconded in score while personnel management area holds. the low est mean score. In addition, professional role area is performed with a relatively high mean score. utilization of the nursing process was also satisfac tory, however, emphasis was on some phases than on others in the three areas of care that follow the nursing pro cess as a frame work. As regards supervisors expectations and graduates performance, findings indicated the presence of posi tive correlation between expectation and performance at pL 0.01 and P <: 0.05 level of significance in both assessment and implementation of patient/family care area, planning and implementation of personnel manag-. ement area and professional role area.
