Abstract

Mortality data concerning the causes of death are the most practical indicator of health status in the community. They provide a useful tool for evaluation of health service~ and determination of high risk groups. They also fulfil the requirements of comparative studies (national and international) carried out to determine changing patterns of causes of death. However in Egypt and most of the developing countries records concerning the ~auses of death are sometimes lack­ ing accuracy. This may result from missdiagnosis and/or improper tabulation according to categories of the Inter­national Classification of. Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death (lOD). Hence this study was performed with the aim of determining the causes of ~death and their analysis in rele,tion to v\rious ...epidemiologic parameters namely: age-, sex, religion, nationali,ty, marital status, occupation, socioeconomic standard and seasonal variation. To accomplish this work a sample of mortalities was collected from six health offices chosen randomly to . represent the various socioeconomic levels in Alexandria. This study was performed thrQughout a period starting from 1st of April 1980, to end of march 1981. A questionn­ aire was designed to collect data through interview with the relatives of the deceased. The diagnosis of causes of death was performed through examination of the decea~~d searching for helpful signs.
