Abstract
Two field trials were carried out at Shandaweel Research station (Souhag Governorate) in two successive seasons of 1995/96 & 1996/97 to find out the relative advantage of intercropping some summer crops with sugar cane in respect to yield and quality of sugar cane as well as yield and quality of the companion crops.
Each trial included nine treatments which were the combination between three row spacing i.e. 100 , 120 and 140 cm and three intercropping patterns of soybean and sorghum (cane alone , cane + one row of soybean or sorghm, cane + 2-row of soybean or sorghum and cane + 3-row of soybean or sorghum).
In addition to the above mentioned intercropping treatments, both soybean and sorghum were sown in pure stand in four replication as a check treatment. Treatments were arranged in a complete randomized block design in four replications. A commercial sugar cane variety viz G.T.54-9 was used in this study.
