Abstract
The present study included fifteen male patients with pure uncomplicated bilharzial cor pulmonale, their ages ranged between 15-52 years. All were free from any other disease which might affect their cardiovascular system. None had any valvular dysfunction or heart failure. They did not receive antibilharzial therapy for at least three months prior to the study to exclude the effects of these drugs on the heart.
The aim of the work woe to assess the left ventricular function in patients with ”bilharzial cor pulmonale, and to evaluate the various methods used in this study. After complete clinical, routine laboratory, electrocardio¬graphic and radiological examinations» all the patients were subjected to the following:
- Echocardiographic study: the tracings were analysed to calculate the left ventricular dimensions, EP%
The posterior well, interventricular septum and mitral valve were analysed.
Left cardiac catheter, aortic and left ventricular pressures were recorded with simultaneous measurement of cardiac output and stroke volume..
