Abstract

Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) is the most common nosocomial infection in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and is associated with major morbidity and mortality.
The current study was done in order to determine the frequency of gastro-esophageal reflux (GER) in mechanically ventilated pediatric patients and to detect it’s role as a risk factor for VAP.
The current study also had aimed to detect other risk factors and mortality among VAP patients in PICU.
This study was conducted in children’s hospital, PICU, Ain Shams University and included 24 mechanically ventilated patients and had been followed up for 72 hours after mechanical ventilation.
According to CPIS (clinical pulmonary infection score), 16 patients of whom were diagnosed clinically as VAP (group A) and the other 8 patients who had not developed VAP during the first 72 hours after mechanical ventilation were included as control patients (group B).
