Abstract

Attempts have been made to synthesize intelligent polymeric biomaterials based on natural polymers to be used in different biomedical applications. In this connection, gamma rays induced copolymerization of naturally occurring materials, such as cellulose acetate, carrageenan, alginate, carboxy methyl cellulose and agar-agar in combination with different vinyl monomers, such as acrylic acid and N-isopropyl acrylamide were used to prepare pH and/or temperature sensitive hydrogels and membranes. The influence of preparation conditions such as irradiation dose, comonomer composition on conversion and gelation degrees of the produced hydrogels and membranes were studied. The prepared hydrogels and membranes were characterized by studying their swelling behavior, mechanical and thermal behavior as well as topographic properties at different stimuli. The applicability of the prepared intelligent materials as drug delivery systems was evaluated. The permeability and the release of different model drugs and protein such as Aspirin, Ketoprofen and Bovine serum albumin were investigated under different pH and/or temperature. The obtained results indicate that the prepared intelligent natural polymer based membranes and hydrogels are promising in the field of controlled drug delivery.
