Abstract

Summary and conclusion
The present study was performed on 30 persons of both sexes; 20 ulcerative colitis patients and 10 control persons.
All subjects of the study were subjected to the following:
• Complete history taking and full clinical examination, all patients with UC were assessed clinically by CAI.
• Laboratory investigations: stool analysis, CBC, liver function tests, renal function tests, PT, PTT, INR, FDPs, ESR and CRP.
• Endoscopic examination and biopsies for histopathological examination.
• Radiological examination: abdominal x-ray in supine position, abdominal ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound.
The patients were suffering from ulcerative colitis with different degrees of activity. The aim of this study was to assess the activity of the disease by different parameters clinical, biochemical, endoscopic and radiological; correlating these data with each other to assess the validity and accuracy of these methods of assessment of disease activity and determine the possibility of this use for noninvasive follow up and response to treatment instead of colonoscopy which is an invasive procedure.
 The present study revealed that there is a significant correlation between bowel motions per day and abdominal pain with activity of UC.
 The present study revealed that there is a significant correlation between ESR, CRP and FDPs with activity of UC.
 This study revealed that there is a significant increase in bowel wall thickness in relation to activity of UC. Also, there is a significant increase in vascularity of the bowel wall in relation to activity of UC.
 CAI using important clinical and laboratory parameters related to activity of ulcerative colitis was an effective rapidly evaluating method for confirming disease activity.
CAI has the following advantages:
• Its calculations are easier.
