Abstract

In the present work, a study of the cooling load from external walls and roofs and its variation during the hours of operation and its value in non-continuous operation was carried on.

This study evaluated the effect of the different parameters such as wall construction, material, its thickness and insulation on the value of the cooling load. The atmospheric design conditions such as dry bulb temperature, solar radiation intensity, the wall orientation, location and latitude as well as wind velocity were taken as those prevailing in greater Cairo area. Thermal radiation from neighboring buildings, the sky radiation and thermal reaction with the internal partitions were considered.

A mathematical model for composite walls, taking the above mentioned factors into consideration was set. The partial differential equations and the corresponding boundary conditions are given. These equations were solved by an unconditionally stable, semi-implicit finite difference method whose accuracy and convergence have been examined before .
