Abstract

This study investigated the diametral tensile strength (DTS) of three ionomer based restorative materials (Fuji II, Fuji II LC and Fuji IX). The diametral tensile strength of the three materials was compared after the application of two topical fluoride agents (1.23% APF gel and 0.4% SnF2 gel) at time intervals: 24 hours and 28 days. Ninty samples were prepared using split Teflon moulds and stored in distilled water at room temperature. Fluoride application was carried out according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The diametral tensile strength was tested using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The maximum load applied to fracture the specimens was recorded and the diametral tensile strength in (MPa) was calculated. One way analysis of variance (Procedure ANOVA of SAS) followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test were used to test the effect of topical fluoride application on the diametral tensile strength within each restorative material. At 24-hour; the diametral tensile strength of Fuji II showed an increase with both fluoride gels, APF gel had no effect on DTS for Fuji ΙI LC and decreased DTS for Fuji ΙX. SnF2 gel had no effect on DTS of Fuji ΙX and decreased DTS for Fuji ΙI LC. At 28-day: APF gel had decreased DTS for Fuji ΙI, no effect on DTS of Fuji ΙI LC and increased DTS of Fuji ΙX. SnF2 gel had no effect on DTS of both Fuji II and Fuji ΙI LC but increased DTS of Fuji ΙX. By increasing the storage period up to 28 days: there was an increase in DTS with time for both Fuji ΙI and Fuji ΙI LC but for Fuji ΙX; there was a decrease in DTS.
