Abstract

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is the most common nosocomial infection in the intensive care unit and is associated with major morbidity and mortality.

The current study was done in order to determine the incidence, risk factors, mortality and organisms causing nosocomial pneumonia in ventilated patients in paediaric Intenisve care unit (PICU)
This study was conducted in Children’s Hospital, Pediatric ICU, Ain Shams University and included 46 patients on mechanical ventilation for more than 2 days.
According to CPIS, 30 patients of whom were diagnosed clinically as VAP (group I) and the other 16 patients were not so they were assigned as controls (group II).
For all included patients full medical history was taken thorough clinical examination was done together with CBC, CRP, urea , creatinin, Albumin and electrolytes Chest X Ray and basal CBG and ventilation settings.
For group I in addition the following were done bronchoscopy for BAL collection for microbiological processing.
