Abstract

In order to compare the role of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with those of ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT) and hepatic angiography in the detection and characterization of hepatic tumours, 50 patients with various benign and malignant liver tumours were examined by these different imaging modalities, in the Imaging Department of Rennes University Hospital Pontchaillou France.
In the 50 examined patients, MR proved to be both the most sensitive technique in detecting hepatic tumours and the most accurate for their characterization.
In the 19 patients presenting with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), MR was the most sensitive technique in detecting HCC nodules (70%) , as compared with US (67%) and CT (58%); however, by excluding patients with difficult US examination (gas), US proved to be the most sensitive technique. Hepatic angiography was the least sensitive technique (22%). Concerning accurate characterization, MR (83%) clearly superseeded US (18%), CT (33%V and angiography (33%).
In the ten patients with hepatic metastases, the most sensitive technique for metastases detection was MR (91%), followed by CT (79%) and US (70%). For accurate.
