Abstract The aim of this work is to study the possible aetiological factors and lines of treatment of KienbOck’s disease. The details of lunatomalacia were first reported by Kienbdck in 1910. Kienbock’s disease is an isolated disorder ofthe lunate in which there is progressive collapse of the lunate. (Alexander and Lichtman, 1986) Peste, 1843, first described collapse of the carpal lunate. His discovery before the development of x-rays, was based on studies of anatomical specimens. He believed the lesion to be a fracture with trawnatic etiology. Kienbiick in 1910, also thought this lesion to be a result _ of trauma. He believed that repeated sprains, contusions or subluxations lead to ligamentous and vascular injury, resulting in loss of blood supply to the lunate. Since that time numerous authors have described the pathological changes as avascular necrosis. |
