Abstract

This study included 55 patients admitted to Assiut University Hospital between June 1996 and February 1998. All patients were subjected to surgical interference upon the emergency unprepared left colon. Two surgical procedures were applied, either primary resection and anastomosis with intra-opertative colonic wash (in 27 patients) or staged resection in the form of anastomosis with proximal colostomy (in 28 patients) and we can found that:
- Primary resection and anastomosis or primary repair of unprepared colon be safely done after intra-operative colonic wash plus four-finger dilatalion and/or rectal tube fixation.
- This method has nearly the same morbidity and mortality or even lower than staged operations with avoiding the burden of stoma formation including its morbidity and mortality.
